Hello fellow friends! It is with great joy and is my pride that I present to you my plushie I just made!
This technically took me the whole day to make, but should've only taken a few hours (3 at most) because I kept getting distracted... Oh well. Here he is- a black elephant! He doesn't have a name yet so if you have any suggestions, I'm open for them!
I know there are some flaws in him, but since I hand-sewed him, I am quite pleased with the way he turned out- especially since I didn't use any pattern.
Now I'm not very fond of WIP (work in progress) pictures, but I figured, what do I have to lose? So here you go- my progress starting from step one (or close to it)
He was made from black felt, black thread, yellow felt, stuffing, and a piece of wire. He intentionally has NO eyes.
After I was halfway done with the head, I realized that I should take some WIP pictures. Basically, I cut the basic pattern from felt for the head. Since I didn't want him "2-D", I added a third piece on the bottom side of his head. (If anyone needs a picture, I'll be happy to make one) When I added the bottom piece, he looked like an anteater so I decided to put a wire in his trunk. Now he has a poseable trunk.
The tusks were fairly simple: cut out long rectangles of yellow felt, round off the edges, sew, flip inside out, stuff and sew on the head.
A 3/4 view.
After I made and stuffed the ear, I tried looking to see where the ear would look the best. It isn't sewed on yet.
I finally found the place I wanted and sewed the ear on. He is now resembling an elephant!
I did the same thing to the other side. I now have the completed head!
3/4 view.
Notice that I didn't sew the back of the head. This is because I will sew it onto the body at a later time. The white stuff is stuffing.
Here is the body consisted of 4 pieces: the back, the bottom and the two sides. I later cut the bottom part because otherwise the body looked too unnatural with the head.
This is the back. Notice how it gives it a "3-D" shape instead of a flat "2-D" shape.
Opposite of the back, this is where I will later sew the head. The white stuff is (once again) stuffing.
I'm looking to where the head will sit when it is against the body. This is what I meant by the body being too big. Look at my hand. See that black lump between my thumb and my palm? That is a hump and I didn't like how it looked.
I know what you're thinking. "Then move the head on top of the hump to hide it!"
So I did. Notice that there's too much fabric at the bottom now. I cut a small piece of felt out from the bottom piece.
As you can see, this is the result. Much better, don't you think? Here is also a foot, sewed with three pieces: the two sides and the bottom. It is also stuffed.
I now have two legs made and sewed on.
He has three legs! One more to go!
The body is finished!
I then sewed on the head and added a tail (seen further down in this post)
Sitting back on his hind legs.
A close-up of the tail. Nothing fancy- just a piece of black felt sewn on.
As you can see, he is about the size of a normal kleenex box, or if you look at the keys on my laptop, you can see he is kinda big, but also fairly small.
I had a lot of fun making this little guy.
He is part of my 'African Savannah' collection of plushies that I am currently making. The theme of my room is an African Savannah (or will be once I'm done with it!), and he'll be a great addition to it!
Sorry if it sounds a but dull at times because I wrote out this nice long awesome post and my computer deleted it! Grawr. Oh well.
If you guys want me to write a tutorial (instead of WIP), then just say the word.
Thanks! If you have any questions, feel free to ask them!
