Hello. My name is Iceburg. Over the next couple days I will be making a tutorial on how to make a head for either Halloween, cosplay, or just for fun. This section focuses on the materials needed for the particular type of head I'm making. Here is an example of a type of head you'll be making:
Please keep in mind that since I already made this one, I will not be making the same one, but a different one. I am thinking on Blueno's CP9 mask, although I will show you how to fur it with this green fabric as I do not yet have the fabric for the mask. Either that or make my Halloween costume mask which I do need to make. If you have any particular thing/person/etc. you would like me to attempt to make, please drop me a message before I finish and I'll thake the thought into consideration.
Anyways, onto the tutorial.
Materials needed (will go specific later):
Foam
Scissors
Plastic Mesh
Braiding Lace
Hot Glue
Hot Glue Gun
Fur/Fabric
Tape
Bacon Skillet thing
Foam:
I got mine at WalMart. It should be the type of foam used in seat cushions, sometimes called upholstery foam or (I believe) open-celled foam. If you go to the craft section of your local WalMart you should find a brand called Morning Glory and will look something like this:
24"x96"x1" Only has one long piece- is one inch thick. Most of the foam you should get should be 1 inch thick.
16"x16"x1" Has 4 square pieces of 1 inch thick foam. Very useful. As you can see, it is crumpled since I used most of the foam. You might want to get more than is needed just in case.
Keep in mind that this is NOT styrofoam. It is soft and squishy- if you can't find any foam, seat cushions will do. The normal color will be white, but you can find them in any color- green, yellow, black, pink- it won't matter- you'll be covering it with fabric/fur later.
Scissors:
Pretty self-explanatory. You need to get some good, decent scissors, preferably ones that can cut through thick fabric easily, but normal ones work well too. I used some sewing scissors that cut extremely well with fabric.
Plastic Mesh:
Found in ANY craft stores. Once again, I got mine at WalMart. It's also called plastic canvas, or, artist stiff plastic canvas.
Here are a few pictures:
The label. I got a 6 pack that is 7-mesh. Whatever that means.
Try to get the longest mesh possible. Mine is probably 2 feet long- enough to go around my head.
A visual to show how long it is. Hope this helps a bit.
The brand name I got is Craft-It and below that it says Quick Count plastic canvas. Uniek. It has a website that reads: www.uniekinc.com
Braiding Lace:
I found this out in the garage- I assume you can find it at any craft store, maybe WalMart. This brand is Tandy's Braiding Lace #3902. 100 yards. Solid Plastic. Apparently made in USA and I guess someone got it for $2.99 somewhere. Hmm.
Looks like this:
Mine is green, plastic, and if you tye a knot, it will quickly come undone (don't know if that last part was useful or not..) It doesn't matter what color it is- you'll just be using this to sew the mesh together. Note: If done properly you will not need a needle.
Hot Glue:
Once again, pretty self-explanatory. I got mine at WalMart cheap because I got the type that was 50 for about $4.00 or so. It is Adhesive Tech Standard Round Glue Sticks. 4"x44". Smells horrible when heated up. I got the multi-temp one.
Hot Glue gun:
I snagged this from my mom. You can get these anywhere. Mine is a Surebonder glue gun that apparently heats up ti 380F.
Fur/Fabric:
Basically, what you're going to see once the product is done.
Got three yards of this at WalMart. Pretty good, green fur with black tips. Fairly soft, good quality. Thick.
I got these three furs at Hancock Fabrics. The three colors are black, sky blue, and royal purple. I'm going to use these for my Halloween costume. They are okay quality, kinda soft- thin. Definitely not as thick as the WalMart fur.
You can also use other fabrics such as felt, nylon, cotton, etc.
Some other places I've heard that carry good furs (if you need fur):
JoAnne's Fabric (also carries good fabric)
WalMart
Hancock Fabrics
Denmark Fabric
Bacon/Skillet thing:
Looks like this:
You put it over bacon when it's cooking and it'll hold the grease in. I got mine at the dollar store. You need it to see out of.
I will be experimenting with making different eyes on this next project. If you have any questions on any of the materials here, please ask. Thanks! Iceburg
